Time Capsule: Virgo 2021

Now that school has started back up and I'm faced with the dreadful 7am wake-up, I've been trying to make the most of the morning by sipping my coffee on the stoop of my back patio in the morning quiet. There was a particularly special instance of this last week, when, instead of stepping out into the endless summer mugginess, the air was crisp and cool. The sky was a clearer blue than I remember ever seeing. I rushed back inside and said to Mikey, "It's an entirely new season!"

And it is. Even though Fall is still weeks away, we're in a new season of life, a new chapter as always. Yes, I believe the weather has a certain power to make it happen in an instant, the world born again overnight. I woke up into a new world on that day (I don't even remember what day it was; it doesn't matter), and things will never be the same.

In terms of the spinning Earth and her many comrades spinning and moving way out there, we can look back to the Lion's Gate of last month to know that life has been very go-go-go as of late, but also very centered, asking us: What do you want? For me in particular, I was guided to prepare early for the coming months, getting "back in the swing of things" if you will. I got to play with what I wanted to achieve, and now that I've done so, I'm in the present building some really strong habits. Rather than playing, Virgo asks us to analyze: Whatever it is that you want, how do you get it and keep it? I've recently learned that because Virgo is my rising sign and, therefore, my first house, I should be able to lean way into this - like a clean slate. Next month, in Libra, we balance all the latest lessons.

But taking it back down to Earth, I don't know about you, but I've been feeling an intense calm even in the midst of chaotic back-to-school energy and frightening world events. I feel a sureness. Something about the hardship and uncertainty of the past year and a half, I think, has gotten us to a point where we are so prepared (and, perhaps, on edge) that we don't necessarily need the extra anxious energy. We know at this point what we need to do out there - just the same as we do within.

So let's take a minute to gather our surroundings and focus. How are you being guided?

Signs: More butterflies - I've decided to commemorate them with a tattoo. Dreams of the outdoors, summer-camp-esque scenes, friends, and truths that my ego isn't ready to send into the light just yet. Ducks replacing the geese at the pond in our backyard - geese starting to fly south.

Colors: Sage green, white, sky blue, purple. 🍃

Feelings: A lightness, a breeziness. Always calm, usually quiet. It's seriously so strange to have a brain that's not reeling every single second. Strange, but welcome.

Sounds: Aside from the ducks squawking at nearly 11pm, this new playlist is a real jam! Some of the usual are featured again (too many good albums this summer), but there are some newbies as well. One of my favorite moments entering Virgo season was the last morning at the lake, sitting on the dock by myself while clouds rolled in and dropped a few sprinkles here and there. Lorde's newest album had just dropped, so I played it straight through as I laid on the fading wood and let myself get rained on, and moments later, warmed back up by the returning sun. At the end of "Oceanic Feeling," I jumped into the water and swam in silence for over an hour. This album is grossly underappreciated.

Some of the highlights:

  • That Life - Unknown Mortal Orchestra: If you were as obsessed with "Hunnybee" as I was in 2018...this is twice as good. I'm serious.

  • Secrets from a Girl (Who's Seen it All) - Lorde: I had an incredibly difficult time picking just one song from Solar Power to add, but to choose one that encompasses the feeling of this new life season, I think this one does best. We've lived a lot, and we're's what we can say about it now.

  • New Slang - The Shins: I hope everyone knows this song. It's not even close to new, but again, it fits the bill for that "new chapter" feeling. It's always on repeat for me this time of year.

  • Male Fantasy - Billie Eilish: I gotta be honest with you, I am not the biggest Billie fan. I've liked a few of her songs here and there, but overall never got the hype. That said, I find this song to be so beautiful and simple in its ability to showcase the human reality that, sometimes, we don't need to be weighed down by the baggage and pain. We can have it and keep going, and best of all: we can forgive.

Now that I've written this all out, and thinking about nearly every other song on the list...there is a huge theme at play here. I want to know what you think it is...

Last but never least, Intentions: We're in the middle of Virgo season now with Libra fast approaching. Even still, the lessons are just beginning to take form, and we remain determined to work toward what we want. Now is the best time to do it. Now is always the best time. Today and forevermore, recognize your power and know that you have everything you need within you. It will never be perfect, it will never be "exactly right," but it will happen with love. That's what matters.
